Malcolm (Mike) Harris received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia, his Master’s Degree from West Texas A & M, and did post-graduate work at North Texas State University where he played with Rich Matteson’s student combo, along with Lyle Mays, Pete Brewer, John Riley, Marc Johnson and others. He has been principal trumpet with the Midland-Odessa and Roanoke (Va) symphony orchestras. He was the
original marching band director at Madison College, Harrisonburg, VA – now James Madison University. He is a retired Texas band director. He is currently teaching brass at Lone Star College-CyFair and assisting with the
jazz band. His 1978 Amarillo, TX High School Jazz Ensemble was one of 3 U.S. high school bands to appear in an evening concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and played a 21 day European Tour. Since moving to Houston he has performed with many bands including as jazz trumpet with the Houston Pops Orchestra. He was a regular member of the Danny Ward Band from the mid 1980s, both as a trumpet player and arranger. He also performed with the Ed Gerlach Orchestra and the Richard Brown Orchestra. In his free-lance career he has performed with Andy Williams, Vic Damone, The Modernaires, Robert Goulet, Rita Moreno, Vicki Carr, Marilyn Maye, Nancy Ames, Flip Wilson, The Letterman, The Drifters, Sonny and Cher, Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme, Teresa Brewer, Toni Tenille, Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach, Rich Little, Bob Newhart (piano-conductor), Suzanne Somers, Melba Moore, John
Denver, George Shearing, Frankie Lane, Ray Charles, Bob Hope, Maureen McGovern, Gloria Loring, Englebert Humperdink, Marilyn McCoo, Marvin Hamlisch, Peter Marshall,Bernadette Peters, Larry Gatlin, Natalie Cole, Jay Leno, Randy Travis, Michael W. Smith, Bill Cosby, the Tex Beneke Orchestra, Barry Manilow, Manhattan Transfer, The Rat Pack, and others. He is one of Houston’s most sought after arrangers and orchestrators.
