Johnny Gonzales was born and raised in Houston, Texas, studying extensively with Hal Tennyson, formerly with the Tex Benicke Band and as a lead alto sax player with the Radio City Orchestra in New York City. Johnny graduated from Milby High School in HISD, obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Music for Sam Houston State University and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston. Johnny also served in the United States Air Force as a musician, featured throughout Central and South America and completed his tour of duty in the Washington DC band, ‘Mach One’.
Johnny Gonzales retired from Houston ISD as the Principal of Marshall Middle School Academy of Fine Arts Magnet and continues to teach the art of playing the saxophone instructing woodwinds master classes and jazz performance in middle schools, high schools and colleges throughout the Houston and Metropolitan areas. Of course, he is also actively working as a performing musician.
Mr. Gonzales’ expressive and lyrical style on the alto, tenor and soprano saxophones, as well as on the flute has been heard accompanying top entertainers and performers such as Diane Schuur, Paquito D’Rivera, David Sandborn, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Ray Charles, Sean Jones, John Fedchock, as well as the original “Temptations”.
Johnny’s passion for jazz and the alto saxophone is evident when heard playing with the Houston Jazz Orchestra. Playing Christian music at Second Baptist West Campus in Katy, TX has provided yet another extension for his soulful, spirit filled music, adding to his list of accolades. “When you hear him play, you’ll know it’s from the heart”.
