Anthony Sapp was born to a musician father and grew up in the Houston area. He played drums, keyboards and bass in various local bands through his teen years. In 1988 he began to focus on bass and attended San Jacinto College where he studied Jazz Improvisation under Shelly Berg. Shortly thereafter he moved to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute in Hollywood. (B.I.T.) Soon he was doing numerous recording sessions in some of L.A.’s top studios including Herb Alpert’s 1990 release “North on South Street”. After returning to his roots in Houston in 1993 he quickly fell into the local music scene. He has become one of the most in demand bassists in the area on upright and electric, logging hundreds of recording sessions. A member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 65-699, he has played for various artists on tour, from Norway to Las Vegas to Japan. He is an endorsee of Simonetti Basses. He currently serves as occasional musical director for Riverpointe Church Missouri City and juggles a steady schedule of studio work and gigs encompassing many different genres of music.
